Rec vs. Club vs. Travel: What Each Level Really Costs

Updated October 2026 · 3 min read · Sources at the end
The short answer

Moving from rec to club is the biggest money decision in youth sports: for a 9- to 12-year-old, a season jumps from about $300–$400 to $2,600–$3,800, and a travel team runs $5,200–$7,100. The jump buys real things, like paid coaching and more games, but it also buys travel, which is where most of the extra money goes.

Here's what each level costs in soccer and baseball, and what you get for it.

What each level costs, ages 9–12

Baseball costs less than soccer at the club level but more once teams travel, because baseball teams play more tournament weekends.

Level Soccer Baseball
Recreation $300 $400
Club / local team $3,800 $2,600
Travel / regional $5,200 $7,100
Elite / national $10,400 $14,800

Annual totals per player include fees, uniform and gear, tournament entries, hotels at $150 a night, gas and food, and lessons or camps. They are U.S. suburban averages; costs run higher in the Northeast and big cities and much lower in small towns. For a breakdown by age, see our guides to travel baseball costs and club soccer costs.

What you get at each level

Each step up usually adds a paid coach, more practices and more weekends away. Details vary by club, so ask.

Level Coaching Typical commitment Overnight trips a year
Recreation Parent volunteers One practice and one game a week, one season None
Club / local team Paid or experienced coaches Two practices a week, longer season, local tournaments 1–2
Travel / regional Paid, licensed coaches Two to three practices a week, most of the year 3–6
Elite / national Professional staff Three or more practices a week, year-round, showcase events 5–10, some with flights

Rec isn't a lesser choice for many kids. Community-based teams are still the most common setting where children play their main sport.

How to decide whether to move up

Ask these before tryouts, not after:

  • Does your child want more? More practices and weekends away only pay off if the player is asking for them.
  • Can the family budget handle the real total, not just the club fee? Plan on the all-in number for the level.
  • Are your weekends free? Travel teams can take most weekends in season, for the whole family.
  • Is there a step in between? Many areas have rec all-star, challenge or regional-league teams that cost far less than full travel.
  • What's the goal? Many parents see travel sports as a path to a college scholarship. In one survey, 83% of parents said their child had the ability to play in college, but the money is a better bet when it's spent on what your child enjoys now.
