A Month-by-Month Budget for a Travel Sports Season

Updated October 2026 · 3 min read · Sources at the end
The short answer

A travel sports season doesn't cost the same every month. It arrives in spikes: club fees, new gear and tournament weekends bunch into a few months, while others cost almost nothing. For a typical 12U travel soccer player, two months carry half the year's $5,240 bill.

The fix is a fixed monthly set-aside: about $440 a month for soccer or $600 a month for regional travel baseball, started before the first big payment is due.

When the money goes out

The dashed line is the monthly set-aside. Months above it are covered by savings built up in the quiet months.

Why those months spike

Soccer runs on a fall-to-spring club year.

  • July: the first half of the club fee is due after tryouts.
  • August: new uniform kit and cleats before the fall season.
  • October, November and April: overnight tournament weekends.
  • January: the second half of the club fee.

Baseball runs on a spring-and-summer year with a fall season.

  • September: the first half of the team fee after fall tryouts.
  • February: the second half of the fee plus most of the year's new gear, right before opening day.
  • March through July: a tournament weekend most months, with hotels.
  • November through January: winter lessons and indoor training keep costs low but steady.

Your club's payment dates may differ. Ask for its schedule and line it up against your own calendar.

Some soccer clubs also offer a monthly payment plan that spreads the club fee into equal payments. If yours does, the July and January spikes in the chart shrink, and the club fee becomes part of your steady monthly cost. Ask whether there is a plan and whether it adds a fee.

How to set up a sports fund

A separate savings account just for sports, sometimes called a sinking fund, turns the spikes into one steady payment. Financial planners like it because it also sets a natural ceiling on what sports can take from the rest of the budget.

  1. Find your season total. Add up fees, gear, tournaments, hotels and training, or let the calculator do it.
  2. Divide by 12. That's your monthly transfer: about $440 for 12U travel soccer or $600 for 12U regional baseball.
  3. Start early enough. Because the big payments come first, soccer families need about three months of deposits saved before the July fee, so start in April. If your club offers monthly payments, you can skip this head start. Baseball's payments are spread out more evenly, so starting one month before the September fee is enough.
  4. Automate it. Set the transfer for the day after payday so it happens before anything else.
  5. Pay every sports cost from that account, so you can see at a glance whether the season is on budget.

Sources and assumptions

Monthly figures come from the True Season Cost calculator for a 12U player, U.S. suburban average: travel soccer (club fee $2,600, three overnight tournaments) and regional travel baseball (team fee $2,200, six overnight tournaments), hotels at $150 a night, lessons included. Fees are assumed paid in two installments.
